INDIA:a failed democracy?

Many of us may not have a very pleasant opinion about our motherland especially regarding how our country is governed. We perpetually complain how bad our 'netas' are and how a 'good' dictator would have helped sorting things out.we even have films in which the hero who is an ordinary man suddenly takes over and tries to remove corruption on his own.(Read indian,muthalvan,nayak,anniyan....) But have we ever wondered how lucky we are to have a democracy. In a region full of failed states and troubled countries we are the only live and kicking democracy.true we experienced a brief spell of dictatorship under Mrs. I but that was it. Though ours is a one full of flaws and we experience trouble in Bihar in conducting election,we have a elected government in the city and the states. The whole world predicted soon after independence that democracy was not suited for a nation like India which consisted of people from many religions and languages. They did the same during Mrs.I's rule. But we are still a democracy.Ofcourse with such a big population we may have problems and development might be snail pace,But at last we have our right to choose our rulers...... I know that this in an older piece that you have written, but I had to comment on it. I agree with you whole heartedly. I reside in the United States but was born in India and have been there many times and follow the goings on there very closely. I often tell both my American friends and my Indian friends that India and Indians should be PROUD of their country. India is a shining example of how respect for multi-culturism and secularism can work. I wish my Indian relatives and friends had more faith in and more kind words for their unique country. India is truly limited only by it's own insecurity.
